On the 17th of February, Kajire Girls high school which is among our sponsored schools in Taita Taveta emerged the winners at the Diamond Africa challenge, held in Elgeyo Marakwet. The competition, run by Startup Africa essentially connects, mentors and builds skills for the students, youth and women besides spurring the entrepreneurship engagement.
‘’We have invested quite a bit in the Taita Taveta schools enhancing technical job and business skills of students and growing startups at this early stage. Our project gives them the same opportunities often unavailable due to remote location. What a joy to see this paying off.’’ –David Ogiga, Director Sote Hub Kajire Girls alongside Murray Girls, both beneficiaries of the Sote ICT schools program and Sote Hub made it through a list of 90 submissions nationally to emerge at finals held at Maria Soti Girls High school.
Kajire emerged the winners at the Business idea category and ranked the best overall too. They are proceeding to University of Delaware, in the USA for the grand finale from 9th April 2018
The team of 4 ladies Joyce Mtoto, Sandra Lukindo, Nancy Wairimu and Macrina Antonia guided by their teacher Mr. Ezra Abuga have often prominently featured in various editions of the Trade Fair held annually by the Sote ICT, a platform though which they have undoubtedly mastered the art of idea generation, pitching, general presentation and business skills which came in handy during the challenge.
The Kajire students’ innovation is a sensor that generates mobile alerts and alarms to Kenya Wildlife Services rangers and villagers ensuring real time response before elephants cause damage to properties. This minimizes the human-elephant conflict in wildlife conservation regions such as the Tsavo where both schools are apparently located. It has an integration of motion sensors and GSM.
Sandra Lukindo one of the champions expressed her excitement on winning and attributed the success to dedication, hard work from her team members and great support from her teacher Ezra , Sote Hub and Principal Phydiliah Kilimo.
”Every day we face challenges of elephant conflicts, loosing families and properties. Instead of conservation being a joy, it has turned into a pain for most of our families. This inspired us to come up with a solution. Through the guidance of our teachers, mentorship and support Sote Hub we got the confidence of taking on anyone at whichever level” she added.
In his remarks, Mr. Abuga the ICT Patron and mentor at Kajire said it was a pleasant surprise to win the crown. ‘A bigger tasks awaits us in USA and therefore we have no time to celebrate but rather to embark on refining our product.’ He said
Ahead of their April USA trip, they are expected to pay courtesy calls to the Taita Taveta County Governor H.E Granton Samboja, Deputy Governor, H.E. Majala Mlagui and Slovak Ambassador to Kenya H.E Frantisek Dlhopolcek. Slovakia Government through Slovak Aid has financially supported the Sote ICT Project since 2010.
Bravo to Kajire Girls and to Murray Girls.
